Omlab will be presenting a landscape (Biobased Creations), biodynamic slope protection and 2 types of starter homes for animals at the Dutch Design Week 2023. As a rethink tank, Omlab will also participate in discussions with Rijkswaterstaat and partners of The Regenerative City.
Omlabs co-founders Huub en Margreet are at the DDW from Monday 23 till Thursday 26 for sure. Almost fully booked with things to see, sessions and appointments.
But it never hurts to give it a try: app Huub Looze +31 6 16602996 or Margreet van Uffelen +31 6 4148 0244. And who knows?

Possible Landscapes, high sandy soils Achterhoek
Biobased Creations asked Omlab to depict the landscape of the Achterhoek in a table of 2.5 meters in diameter.
With Omlab’s stone-like dry printing material: Buildmatterial. The ilstallation shows the current situation of an area near Hengelo. Fully 3D printed in 4 earth tones (sandy soils to ash soils) and the urban environment in red.
Idea & design: Biobased Creations. Development, 3D printing & material: Omlab in collaboration with Studio Bart Wegh and student Max Koene.

Biobank tile as an example project
Omlab’s mission: Replace concrete with less strong material where possible, and make it positive for nature.
Omlab is working on examples of this for construction and infrastructure.
During the Dutch Design Week, Biobased Creations shows the biobank tile prototype 2022, of which the design is developed with student Juul van den Heuvel. Omlab shows the tile in 2 stages: as a concept idea and excavated after six months of embankment reinforcement. Stage 3, 6 months later, the tile can no longer be dug out: the material has served its purpose and that is to prevent erosion. After a year as enforcement of the slope, nature has taken over and worms have turned the printmatter into grey humus.
Omlab is further developing this nature-friendly biabank tile up to TRL* 4 together with the Municipality of Arnhem, Van Gelder and Morssinkhof Group [2023]. Working together with infrastructure on ‘no paving’, no concrete and no geotextiles: an irreversible change? Early 2024, a demo will be placed at a circular bridge in Arnhem.

Birdbead, Pim van Everdingen; sub-research Maacq Oase (Omlab x Fillip Studios)
TU Twente student Pim van Everdingen presents his graduation work from his research at Fillip Studios.
Birdbead was designed as part of the design research into interactions between 3D printed sculptures and weather, wind, plants and animals. At the same time, Birdbead is also exploring new approaches to algorithm-based 3D modeling and printing. Turkey tailed mushrooms were inspiration for the shape of the spaces around the bird’s nest.
Credits: Pim van Everdingen. Omlab brought in the opportunities for (soil) biodiversity and the specifications for additive manufacturing with Omlabs nature-friendly material. Omlab 3D printed this Birdbead prototype with material prototype Itbettermatter.
