Omlab created Modular by nature, architecture for insects, birds and other city dwellers. The experimental modules are part of the green facade pilot of architecture firm MVRDV. On World Earth Day 2022, April 22nd, the waste based fauna modules have been placed in the vertical garden with the Mobilane system next to lush native plants.
For Omlab, this speculative project is part of the designresearch Building biodiversity: How can biodegradable materials for construction and infrastructure benefit (urban) biodiversity?
The Association for Dutch Designers (BNO) wrote about this prototype and research, in a special about circular design [article in Dutch].
The modules are 3D-printed with Omlab’s material prototype Itbettermatter. The clay like mixture is made of calcite, Kaumera, cellulose (Recell) and alginate, 3 out of 4 resources originate from sewage or drinking water purification.
This co-operation with MVRDV makes it happen for Omlab to explore nature inclusive applications of the ecologically sound materialprototype Itbettermatter.
Omlab’s modules will degrade, that’s a fact. In a next step Omlab will add seeds and minerals to the biodegradable material. So, when the facade modules will desintegrate, the calcium rich material and all the extra’s will benefit soil biodiversity and plant growth. This proces is part of our research into a more biodiverse environment and the building products and materials to help with this.
